A 47-year-old Indian tourist was killed and two others injured when two helicopters collided while attempting to land in Nepal's Mount Everest region on Tuesday.

The accident occurred at Ferihe village, located 4,200 metres (13,780 feet) above sea level, in an area just below Everest Base Camp.

Local authorities confirmed that the deceased was an Indian national from Chennai. Among the injured are a New Zealand citizen and a Nepali pilot.

The total number of people aboard the two helicopters was not immediately known.

Videos circulating online showed the helicopters crashing to the ground following the collision, while more than a dozen people nearby ran for safety.

Helicopters are regularly used in the remote Everest region to evacuate trekkers and guides who need to cut short their journeys due to illness or physical exhaustion, as the area lacks road connectivity.

Temperatures around Mount Everest, the world's highest mountain, remain below freezing throughout the year.

Last week, a hotel along the route to Everest Base Camp caught fire. Heavy snowfall hampered firefighting efforts, but no casualties were reported.
