Government passing bills in parliament ignoring public opinion, says AB Party chief

Amar Bangladesh Party (AB Party) Chairman Mujibur Rahman Manju has accused the government of breaking its promises and deceiving the people by passing bills in parliament without considering public opinion.

He made the remarks at a protest rally held at Bijoy-71 Chattar in Bijoynagar at around 4pm on Wednesday.

Speaking about the laws on enforced disappearances and human rights, Manju said the interim government had created expectations among the people regarding the Prevention and Remedy of Enforced Disappearance Act and the National Human Rights Commission Act. However, those expectations had not been fulfilled through the newly enacted laws.

He alleged that although the government had promised to repeal the previous ordinances and introduce stronger legislation, the laws ultimately passed were weaker. He also questioned the credibility of investigations if allegations of enforced disappearance are investigated by the police or law enforcement agencies against which such allegations have been made.

“Investigations into enforced disappearances must be entrusted to an independent institution whose officials will not face pressure over transfers, promotions or job security,” he said.

Manju said numerous allegations of enforced disappearance had been made in the past, but law enforcement agencies had never voluntarily acknowledged responsibility for such incidents. Therefore, he stressed the need for an independent and impartial institution to investigate such allegations.

“You promised to give us better laws but deceived us. You are breaking your promises one after another. Remember, power is not permanent. Those who are in power today may be out of power tomorrow,” he said.

Referring to other government commitments, Manju said the promise of creating 10 million jobs within one and a half years had also been forgotten. He alleged that despite assurances that fuel prices would not be increased, prices had been raised several times.

He further said people's incomes had not increased, while government employees' salaries had been raised, placing an additional tax burden on ordinary citizens.

“We understand that the war in Iran has created an energy crisis. But is the war in Iran also responsible for the rise in extortion? You are following the same path as before,” he said.

AB Party seeks review of property transfer law

Regarding the Property Transfer Amendment Bill, Manju said the new law could create various complications and disputes in the future.

He particularly questioned whether donated property could subsequently be sold or transferred under the new provisions.

He said allowing parents or donors to transfer ownership of property during their lifetime while retaining their right to use and enjoy the property was a humanitarian provision. However, he stressed that it should also be examined whether any provision of the law conflicts with Muslim law or Shariah.

“The opinions of Islamic scholars must be given due importance in this matter,” he said.

Manju called for a review and necessary amendments to the Prevention and Remedy of Enforced Disappearance Act, the National Human Rights Commission Act and the Property Transfer Amendment Act.

AB Party General Secretary Barrister Asaduzzaman Fuad, speaking at the rally, alleged that those who had entered parliament with the votes of oppressed and persecuted people had forgotten their past.

He also accused them of forgetting the history of persecution of the Zia family, what he described as false cases against former prime minister Khaleda Zia, and incidents involving enforced disappearances, shootings and crossfire killings.

Fuad said the issue was now being witnessed by parliament member Humam Quader Chowdhury and the wife of missing BNP leader Elias Ali. He alleged that the law and home ministers were misleading the nation while speaking in parliament.

He claimed that the National Human Rights Commission Act of 2009 had effectively been brought back and said that if the previous government's law was being restored, the previous government should also be brought back.

Fuad further alleged that the government had betrayed the 31-point reform framework and deceived millions of people aligned with the nationalist political camp.

The rally was moderated by Hadiuzzaman Khokon, member secretary of AB Juba Party. AB Party Joint General Secretary Advocate Abdullah Al Mamun Rana, Aminul Islam FCA, Altaf Hossain and Shahadatullah Tutul also spoke at the programme.
