Thakurgaon-1 by-election on Oct 29

The by-election to the Thakurgaon-1 parliamentary constituency will be held on October 29, the Election Commission (EC) announced the schedule on Thursday.

The seat fell vacant after BNP lawmaker Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir was elected president.

EC Senior Secretary Akhter Ahmed announced the election schedule after the commission finalised the date.

According to the schedule, candidates must submit their nomination papers to the returning officer by September 27.

The papers will be scrutinised on September 29.

The last date for withdrawing candidacies is October 7. Electoral symbols will be allocated to the candidates on October 8. Voting will take place on October 29.

Delwar Hossain has already been named the candidate of the 11-party alliance led by Jamaat-e-Islami for the by-election.

Delwar is a member of Jamaat's central working committee and assistant secretary of its Dhaka South city unit. He is also a former central president of Islami Chhatra Shibir.

He also contested the Thakurgaon-1 seat as the 11-party alliance candidate in the 13th parliamentary election on February 12.

In that election, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir won the seat with 238,836 votes. Delwar Hossain received 141,017 votes.
The BNP has not yet announced its candidate for the by-election.
