Sujon backs Mosaddek as an underused option

Former Bangladesh captain Khaled Mahmud Sujon believes Mosaddek Hossain has not been used to his full potential, describing the all-rounder as one of the country's more underrated cricketers.

Sujon's assessment has brought renewed attention to a player who has spent much of his international career moving in and out of Bangladesh's plans.

Mosaddek has represented Bangladesh in all three international formats and offers the team two skills. He can contribute in the middle order with the bat and provide useful off-spin, giving selectors the option of adding balance to a playing XI.

Yet he has rarely enjoyed a sustained run in the national side.

His international record also shows the difficulty of establishing himself. Mosaddek has played four Tests, 47 ODIs and 33 T20Is, scoring 173, 794 and 389 runs respectively. He has also taken 19 ODI wickets and 18 T20I wickets.

His domestic record has remained stronger. He has accumulated more than 3,400 first-class runs and over 5,800 runs in List A cricket, while continuing to contribute with the ball.

Sujon's comments therefore raise a question about whether Bangladesh have given Mosaddek enough continuity to establish a clear role.

The 30-year-old is no longer an emerging prospect, but he remains experienced enough to offer depth to a side looking for versatile players.

Bangladesh have frequently struggled to find the right combination between batting depth and bowling options, particularly in limited-overs cricket. Mosaddek's skill set could address part of that problem if he is given a defined role and a consistent opportunity.

Whether the selectors agree with Sujon's assessment remains to be seen. But his comments underline a familiar issue in Bangladesh cricket: talented players can struggle to fulfil their potential when opportunities come only intermittently.
