The country’s stock market suffered another sharp fall on Monday, with the benchmark index hitting its lowest level in around three and a half months amid widespread selling pressure.

The DSEX, the benchmark index of the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE), fell 39.55 points to close at 5,379, continuing its decline from the start of the trading session.

Trading activity also declined, with turnover standing at Tk 486.55 crore, around Tk 84.76 crore lower than in the previous session.

Of the 390 companies that traded, share prices fell in 299, or nearly 77 per cent, while prices rose in 56 and remained unchanged in 35.

Market insiders attributed the continued decline to a shortage of good-quality and multinational companies in the market. They called for initiatives to bring established companies to the capital market quickly to help restore investor confidence.

Envoy Textiles topped the turnover list, followed by Paramount Textile and Sharp Industries.

In terms of percentage gains, Standard Insurance led the list, followed by Bangladesh National Insurance and Al-Arafah Islami Bank.

Meanwhile, the overall index of the Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) fell 161.97 points. Total turnover on the CSE stood at Tk 21.34 crore.
