Bangladesh A series win throws up fresh options for the Tigers

Bangladesh A's series-clinching victory over South Africa A has given the national selectors more performances to consider as they look to strengthen the next layer of the Tigers' white-ball squad.

Bangladesh won the three-match unofficial ODI series 1-0 after beating South Africa A by five wickets in the third and final match in Potchefstroom on Saturday. The opening game was abandoned after only 11 overs because of rain, while the second was washed out without a ball being bowled. The final match consequently became the series decider.

The victory was built around Bangladesh's bowling. Rishad Hossain took four wickets for 45 runs and Aliss Al Islam claimed three for 35 as the hosts were bowled out for 182 in 40 overs.

The batting response was equally encouraging. Saif Hassan and Mohammad Naim shared a 92-run opening stand, with Saif making 61 from 53 balls and Naim scoring 60 off 77. Bangladesh reached 185 for five in 33 overs.

The result gives particular value to the performances of players competing for opportunities beyond the current national set-up. Rishad's all-round ability remains an option in limited-overs cricket, while Aliss, one of the uncapped players in the A squad, showed that he can make an impact against quality opposition.

The series also provided valuable exposure for players such as Saif and Naim, whose batting performances came in a chase that never developed into a contest after their opening partnership.

Bangladesh A's campaign in South Africa has therefore produced a useful mix of results and individual performances. After a heavy defeat in the first unofficial Test and a drawn second match, the ODI success provided a stronger finish to the tour.

More importantly, it has added competition for places at a time when Bangladesh need reliable alternatives across formats.

For the selectors, the biggest gain from the 1-0 result may be the number of players who have given them something new to think about.
