Prime Minister Tarique Rahman will deliver his first speech at the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, where climate change will be one of the key issues, said Foreign Affairs State Minister Shama Obaed Islam.

Bangladesh will also highlight the benefits of jute products at the UN Climate Change Conference COP31 in November, she said.

The state minister made the remarks at a programme at the CIRDAP auditorium in Dhaka on Tuesday. The programme focused on how Bangladesh can seek climate justice through climate diplomacy at the UN.

Shama said the current government has opened a separate climate change wing at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for the first time.

“We are working with the Ministry of Environment on climate change issues,” she said.

She said the prime minister’s speech would reflect the government’s commitment to climate change and Bangladesh’s position on the issue.

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is scheduled to travel to New York on September 21 to attend the UN General Assembly. He is expected to stay in the US until September 26 and deliver his speech at the UN on September 24.

The prime minister is also expected to attend COP31 in November.

Shama said women and children are among the worst affected by natural disasters caused by climate change.

“We will tell the international community what should be done for them. We will also highlight the benefits of jute products in the context of climate change,” she said.

She also said the government’s tree-planting and canal-digging programmes would help reduce the impact of climate change.
