‘More dangerous than drugs’: BJP’s war on beef in West Bengal

KOLKATA, Sept 15: Beef supplies in West Bengal have fallen sharply since the state government tightened enforcement of cattle slaughter rules in May, leaving traders, restaurants and consumers facing higher prices and reduced availability.

The impact is particularly visible around Kolkata’s Tangraneighbourhood, where the city’s main municipal slaughterhouse has remained largely inactive for more than three months. 

The West Bengal government issued a notice on May 13 requiring strict compliance with the state’s Animal Slaughter Control Act of 1950. Under the rules, cows, bulls, bullocks, calves and specified buffaloes cannot be slaughtered without a certificate confirming that an animal is eligible for slaughter.�" AL JAZEERA
