Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer and Leader of the Opposition Dr Shafiqur Rahman has condemned an alleged Houthi drone attack attempt near the holy city of Makkah, saying any attack targeting the city is unacceptable under any circumstances.
“Speaking out against and condemning any attack on the holy city of Makkah is our moral and religious responsibility,” he said.
Dr Shafiq made the remarks in a post on his verified Facebook page at 12:49pm on Wednesday.
He said Makkah is honoured because it is home to the Kaaba and is one of the holiest places on earth.
“Whether the attacker is Houthi or anyone else, such an attack is in no way acceptable,” he said.
The statement came after Saudi Arabia said its air defence forces intercepted and destroyed a drone south of Makkah on Tuesday evening before it could enter the restricted airspace over the holy city.
