A student of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) died after drowning in a swimming pool in Sylhet on Wednesday evening.

The deceased was Dipanjan Ghosh Priyam, a student of the Computer Science and Engineering Department from the 2024–25 academic session.

The incident occurred at Britannia Swimming Pool in the Choukidighi area of Sylhet around 6:00 PM.

SUST Proctor Prof Dr Mokhlesur Rahman said Dipanjan and his batchmates celebrated the completion of their final semester classes and laboratory sessions by cutting a cake in the afternoon.

Later, he went swimming with four friends. At one point, Dipanjan drowned in the pool. As he did not know how to swim, his friends did not immediately realise that he was in trouble, the proctor said.

After he surfaced, his classmates rescued him and took him to Nurjahan Hospital in the Dargah Gate area, where the on-duty doctor declared him dead.

Dipanjan’s family home is in Ratan Kandi village of Shahjadpur upazila in Sirajganj. His parents are Krishna Dulal Ghosh and Champa Ghosh. The family lives in the Tajmahal Road area of Mohammadpur in Dhaka.

The proctor said the family members missed their night flight and left for Sylhet by road. As they are expected to arrive in the morning, the body has been kept at the morgue of Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital.

A decision on the autopsy will be taken after the relatives arrive. An autopsy will be conducted if the family wants one; otherwise, the body will be handed over after police clearance, he said.

Whether the body will be brought to the campus will depend on the family’s and the department’s opinions. The university administration will provide necessary assistance if the students demand it, the proctor added.
