Seven Ex-Australia captains seek help for Imran Khan

Seven former Australian cricket captains have urged Foreign Minister Penny Wong to raise concerns with Pakistani authorities over the welfare and treatment of jailed former Pakistan Prime Minister and 1992 World Cup-winning captain Imran Khan. 

The group includes Allan Border, Greg Chappell, Ian Chappell, Belinda Clark, Kim Hughes, Mark Taylor and Steve Waugh.

In a letter to Wong, the former captains said their appeal was humanitarian and that they were not taking a position on Khan’s legal or political case. They expressed concern over reports of limited medical care, restricted family contact and limited access to legal counsel while Khan remains in Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi. 

Greg Chappell has also sought a meeting with Wong to discuss Khan’s circumstances. The former Australian captains urged the Australian government to raise the matter directly with the relevant Pakistani authorities. 

Khan has been imprisoned since 2023 following convictions in Pakistan. His family and supporters have repeatedly raised concerns about his health and detention conditions, while Pakistani authorities have disputed allegations of mistreatment. 

The appeal comes after similar concerns were raised by former international cricket captains about Khan’s treatment in detention.
