Bangladesh Bank has instructed banks, mobile financial service (MFS) providers and other payment service providers to suspend payment services for institutions disbursing loans through digital platforms, including mobile apps and online platforms without the central bank’s approval.
The central bank has also asked the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) to take necessary measures to remove unauthorised loan apps and online platforms, particularly from the Google Play Store.
The instructions were issued in separate letters recently sent to the concerned institutions.
Bangladesh Bank also directed them to take effective measures to warn and raise public awareness about illegal lending apps and inform its Payment Systems Supervision Department about the actions taken against such entities.
According to the central bank’s letters, some mobile apps operating online are providing loans at high interest rates. Customers who take loans through these apps are facing financial losses as well as various forms of harassment.
