South Korea rules out troops to Hormuz amid US-Iran conflict

South Korea will not deploy troops or military forces to join United States operations in the ongoing US-Iran conflict, President Lee Jae-myung announced during a press conference on Friday.

According to a report by Yonhap News Agency, President Lee clarified that Seoul will refrain from taking military steps that could directly embroil the nation in the regional clash.

The President emphasized that the government will limit its actions to minimal necessary measures aimed strictly at safeguarding South Korean commercial shipping vessels and vital oil transit routes in the region.

The policy statement comes amid mounting public opposition and domestic protests against South Korean military involvement in the Middle East, particularly concerning potential troop deployments to the strategic Strait of Hormuz.

Faced with domestic pressures, the administration has chosen to prioritize fuel supply security and commercial maritime protection while avoiding direct involvement in foreign armed conflict.
