Vegetable prices have increased in Dhaka markets after several days of rain. Beans are selling at the highest price of Tk 240 per kg, while round eggplants are being sold at Tk 140.

The prices were found during a visit to several markets in the capital on Friday (September 18).

Beans were selling at Tk 240 per kg, green papaya at Tk 30, yardlong beans at Tk 100, ridge gourd and snake gourd at Tk 60, sponge gourd and bitter gourd at Tk 80, and pointed gourd at Tk 70.

Okra was selling at Tk 70 per kg, tomatoes at Tk 100, cucumber at Tk 80, round eggplant at Tk 140, sweet pumpkin at Tk 60 and green chillies at Tk 200. Bottle gourd was priced at Tk 60-70 each, while jali was Tk 50 each and four green bananas cost Tk 40.

Private-sector employee Nazim Uddin, who was shopping at Malibagh market, said vegetable prices seemed higher than usual. Sellers told him that the recent rain had pushed up prices.

Vegetable seller Mukhlesur Rahman in Rampura said rain had damaged vegetables and reduced supplies in wholesale markets, leading to higher prices. He said prices may fall if the weather improves.

He added that beans are the most expensive vegetable as the season has not yet fully started.
