The first cargo of liquefied natural gas (LNG) imported under a long-term agreement with the United States has arrived in Bangladesh.

The vessel LNG Geneva, carrying the initial shipment, commenced offloading operations at Summit's Floating Storage and Regasification Unit (FSRU) at 4:12 PM on Thursday.

Under the 13-year agreement signed with US-based supplier Gunvor, Bangladesh is slated to import a total of 117 LNG cargoes. A total of five cargoes are scheduled for delivery during the current year as part of the agreement.

The long-term contract was finalized by the government to secure alternative energy sources and ensure stable fuel supply amid ongoing instability in the Middle East.
