531g gold seized from Muscat-returned passenger

Customs intelligence officials seized 531 grammes of gold from a passenger returning from Muscat at Shah Amanat International Airport in Chattogram on Friday.

The passenger had allegedly concealed 24-carat gold in paste form inside his luggage and 35 pieces of gold ornaments in his trouser pocket.

Mohammad Hasan Murad arrived at the airport on SalamAir flight OV 0401 from Muscat. A team of the Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate (CIID), along with officials from Shah Amanat International Airport and other agencies, searched his luggage and body at the customs hall.

During the search, officials found a gold-like substance in paste form wrapped in Scotch tape and concealed inside his bag.

The substance was later processed by a goldsmith, who recovered a 425-gramme 24-carat gold bar from it.

A further search of the passenger found 35 pieces of gold ornaments weighing 106 grammes in his trouser pocket.

The total weight of the seized gold was 531 grammes.

According to customs intelligence officials, the estimated value of the seized gold, including duties and taxes, is Tk 1,00,41,555.

A case is being filed against the passenger with Patenga Police Station over the alleged concealment of the gold.

The Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate will investigate whether any other person or organised group was involved in the smuggling, as well as the source and intended destination of the gold.
