The Nobel Foundation has increased the monetary value of this year’s Nobel Prizes by 9%, raising the award to 12 million Swedish kronor, or about $1.22 million, for each prize category.

The foundation said the increase was aimed at preserving the long-term value and significance of the prestigious awards. Nobel Foundation Executive Director Hanna Stjärne said the higher prize amount would help ensure that the financial component of the award retains its value over time.

The 2026 Nobel Prizes will be awarded in physics, chemistry, physiology or medicine, literature, peace and economic sciences. The winners are scheduled to be announced between October 5 and October 12.

This year also marks the 125th anniversary of the Nobel Prizes. The first awards were presented in 1901, following the will of Swedish inventor and businessman Alfred Nobel.

According to the Nobel Foundation, the first Nobel Prizes carried an award of 150,782 Swedish kronor in each category. The prize money has been adjusted several times over the years in response to the foundation’s financial position.

The Nobel Foundation manages Alfred Nobel’s fortune and has ultimate responsibility for ensuring that the intentions of his will are fulfilled.
