Belgian MP trapped in parliament toilet for 13 hours

A Belgian MP was trapped for nearly 13 hours inside a toilet at the Flemish Parliament in Brussels after the door lock malfunctioned.
Frédéric Erens, 58, was rescued by emergency workers on Wednesday morning after a cleaner discovered him inside. A crowbar was used to force open the defective lock.
Erens was taken to Saint-Jean Hospital in Brussels after experiencing breathing difficulties following the long ordeal.
The incident occurred on Tuesday evening after a committee meeting. Erens had left his mobile phone at his desk and could not call for help when he became trapped.
The Flemish Parliament is located in Brussels. Erens was elected to the Flemish Parliament from Flemish Brabant in 2024. He serves on the committees for Mobility and Public Works and Foreign Policy and is also a municipal councillor in Keerbergen.
