Control Illegal Roadside Parking

Published : Saturday, 19 September, 2026 at 12:00 AM
Letter To the Editor
Dear Sir,

Illegal roadside parking has become a major cause of traffic congestion in Dhaka. Every day, buses, trucks, private cars and motorcycles occupy both sides of roads near offices, schools, colleges and markets. This reduces road space, slows traffic and creates long queues, particularly during peak hours.

The problem also poses risks to public safety. Improperly parked vehicles can obstruct ambulances, fire service vehicles and other emergency responders. When footpaths and roadside spaces are occupied, pedestrians are forced onto the main road, increasing the risk of accidents.

The authorities should provide adequate designated parking facilities and conduct regular drives against illegal parking. Traffic rules must be enforced strictly, with fines for violations, while drivers and vehicle owners should be made more aware of their responsibilities. A coordinated effort between authorities and citizens is essential to restore discipline and make Dhaka’s roads safer and smoother.
