From Australia to UAE, Bangladesh Test cricket enters a new phase

Bangladesh's Test cricket has moved into a demanding new stretch, one that will test not only the team's recent progress but also the depth of its squad.

The journey began in Australia, where Bangladesh returned to Test cricket after a long absence and produced one of the biggest results in their history.

A nine-wicket victory over Australia in Darwin gave Bangladesh their first Test win on Australian soil. Australia responded in Mackay with an innings-and-51-run victory, leaving the two-match series level at 1-1.

The result nevertheless changed the context around Bangladesh's Test cricket. The team showed that it could compete away from home, but the next challenge arrives quickly and under very different conditions.

Bangladesh will face Afghanistan in a one-off Test in the UAE from October 9 to 13. The match will be followed by an ODI tri-series involving Afghanistan and Zimbabwe, adding another layer to an already crowded international programme.
For the Test side, however, the UAE match is the immediate priority.

There is little time to settle before Bangladesh return home for two Tests against the West Indies. The first will begin in Mirpur on October 28, with the second scheduled in Sylhet from November 5 to 9.

Then comes another major examination.

Bangladesh will travel to South Africa in November for two Tests, beginning in Johannesburg on November 15 before the series moves to Centurion on November 23. The tour will continue with three ODIs and three T20Is in December.

The sequence gives Bangladesh five Tests in a compressed period and across markedly different conditions.

Australia demanded discipline against pace and bounce. The UAE will offer a different challenge. Home Tests against the West Indies will place greater emphasis on Bangladesh's ability to control games in familiar conditions, before South Africa brings another demanding overseas assignment.

That makes squad depth central to the campaign.

The selectors have already included five specialist fast-bowling options in the Afghanistan Test squad, while the team also has experienced spin resources and a sizeable group of batting options.

Managing those players will be just as important as selecting them.

Bangladesh cannot approach this period as five isolated Tests. The results will shape the team's position in the World Test Championship while also revealing whether the country now has enough players to sustain a serious Test programme.

Australia showed what Bangladesh can achieve away from home.

The next four months will show how consistently they can do it.
