Dear Sir,
Chattogram Medical College Hospital is the last resort for countless people across greater Chattogram seeking medical care. However, patients and their attendants reportedly face various forms of harassment there. Of particular concern are allegations that some ward boys exert undue influence and demand improper benefits for admitting or transferring patients, providing assistance and facilitating various services. For attendants already distressed by the condition of their loved ones, such treatment can be extremely difficult to endure.
The hospital authorities should promptly and impartially investigate these allegations, clearly display the identities and responsibilities of ward staff, and take strict administrative action if wrongdoing is proven. A 24-hour complaint mechanism, help desk, CCTV surveillance and regular surprise inspections should also be ensured. Effective measures are needed to curb brokers and intermediaries.
People seeking care deserve to receive it without intimidation or exploitation. The authorities must ensure that all patients and attendants are treated with dignity.
