Severe waterlogging hits Dhaka after torrential morning rain

Heavy rainfall early Sunday (September 20) morning submerged roads and alleyways across multiple parts of the capital, causing severe waterlogging and immense hardship for residents, commuters, and shop owners.

Torrential rain accompanied by gusty winds and thunder began around 4:15 AM in Rampura and adjoining neighborhoods. Although the wind subsided over time, persistent rain and intermittent thunder continued through the morning hours.

Low-lying areas including Mugda, Khilgaon, Sabujbagh, Goran, Maniknagar, Taltola, Motijheel, Malibagh, Arambagh, Gulistan, and Palton experienced significant waterlogging. Several key thoroughfares were covered in knee- to waist-deep water, disrupting public transit and vehicle movements during peak morning commuting hours.

Water inundated roads in Sipahibagh, Mugda, and Goran. In the commercial district of Maniknagar, floodwater entered retail shops, damaging goods and causing financial losses to local merchants. In Arambagh, Fakirapool, Kakrail, and Malibagh, main roads and sidewalks were completely submerged, forcing water into roadside establishments.

Public transport and rickshaw services were severely disrupted. Commuters faced long delays, with many forced to pay inflated fares to reach their destinations.

Local residents attributed the recurrent waterlogging to unplanned drainage infrastructure, clogged pipelines, and a lack of routine maintenance, noting that accumulated plastic waste routinely blocks storm water drainage systems.

Residents urged municipal authorities to ensure immediate water removal and implement long-term structural solutions to resolve the capital's chronic waterlogging crisis.
