Two Jamaat leaders stabbed, case filed against 10 BNP men

Two Jamaat leaders were allegedly stabbed in Sirajganj amid an 11-party alliance long march, with a case filed against 10 BNP leaders and activists. Five to 10 unidentified people have also been accused.

The case was filed at Sirajganj Sadar Police Station on Sunday morning by Shohor Bhanu, wife of injured Jamaat leader Abdus Sabur Sheikh.

Former Sirajganj Sadar upazila BNP president Rafiqul Islam Rafiq was among the 10 named accused. The others are Soydabad Union residents Al-Amin, 30, Sohag, 25, Hasan Sheikh, 26, Parvez, 30, Julmat Ali, 32, Hasan Ali, 22, Sanil, 37, Dulal Sheikh, 31, and Alvi Sheikh, 38.

On Saturday, Jamaat organised a roadside rally at Hatikumrul intersection in Sirajganj as part of the Dhaka-Rangpur long march by the 11-party alliance over an eight-point demand. Supporters had gathered on both sides of the western approach road to the Jamuna Bridge since morning.

According to police and local sources, the long march convoy reached Soydabad after crossing the Jamuna Bridge at around 1:15 PM following a roadside rally in Tangail. Some BNP and its affiliated organisation activists allegedly chanted “fake, fake”. This led to an argument between a student wing leader and Abdus Sabur Sheikh, former amir of Soydabad Union Jamaat, and his followers.

The student wing leader allegedly made a phone call, after which several people arrived and stabbed Abdus Sabur Sheikh and Nurunnabi indiscriminately.

The two were taken to Sirajganj Sadar Hospital with serious injuries. As Abdus Sabur’s condition deteriorated, doctors referred him to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital in Bogura, where he is undergoing treatment.

Following the attack, Jamaat leaders and activists gathered at the district Jamaat office and brought out a protest procession demanding the immediate arrest of those involved.

Sirajganj Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Rakibul Hasan confirmed the case, saying the complainant had submitted a complaint to the police station on Saturday night and it was formally recorded as a case on Sunday morning. Efforts are underway to arrest the accused.
