Chawkbazar fire: Smoke billows from Mansur Khan Plaza 21hrs later

Smoke continued to billow from Mansur Khan Plaza in Old Dhaka's Chawkbazar area 21 hours after a devastating fire broke out, with lingering heat causing windows to shatter as firefighters worked to completely extinguish the blaze.

The fire service announced that while the fire was brought under control around 5:20 AM on Tuesday, cooling efforts and removal of charred goods remain ongoing.

Visiting the scene on Tuesday afternoon, thick smoke and a strong burning odor filled the surrounding neighborhood, while shop owners on the lower floors rushed to salvage undamaged goods. Law enforcement restricted public movement by setting up barricades on both sides of the affected road.

At a morning press briefing, Fire Service and Civil Defence Assistant Director Kazi Najmuzaman stated that four firefighters were injured during the operation. He noted that the 6th floor suffered extensive damage while the 7th floor sustained minor impact.

The fire erupted on Monday afternoon, prompting six units from Lalbagh, Siddikbazar, and Palashi to rush to the spot. Firefighters faced major hurdles, including heavy traffic congestion in narrow lanes, extreme heat without ventilation on upper floors, and multiple padlocks on shuttered warehouses stacked with cosmetics, umbrellas, and perfumes.

Officials noted that the accumulation of goods inside packed warehouses made it difficult to completely douse underlying embers without clearing the debris. Authorities will form a committee to investigate the exact cause of the fire, though a short circuit is suspected.
