Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has said it has no comment on the death of the second wife of Satkhira-4 MP Gazi Nazrul Islam, stressing that he is no longer a member of the party.
Mosa. Mariam Khatun, 19, was found hanging inside a flat at NAM Bhaban in Dhaka’s Sher-e-Bangla Nagar on Sunday (September 20) evening.
Jamaat Assistant Secretary Dr AHM Hamidur Rahman Azad told that the matter was personal and that investigating the circumstances surrounding Mariam’s death was the responsibility of the government.
Police said Mariam’s body was recovered from flat 203 on the third floor of Building 5. Members of the CID forensic team were called to the scene to examine the circumstances surrounding the death.
Gazi Nazrul Islam was elected MP from Satkhira-4 for a third time in the 13th parliamentary election with Jamaat’s nomination. However, Jamaat expelled him on July 22 after a personal video involving a young woman circulated on social media. Nazrul subsequently said the woman was his second wife, Mariam Khatun.
Following his expulsion, Jamaat also wrote to the Speaker, Election Commission and other relevant authorities seeking action against him.
