Testimony begins in plot-grab case against Salam Murshedy, 12 others

Testimony began Monday in a case against former MP and former Bangladesh Football Federation senior vice-president Salam Murshedy and 12 others over the alleged illegal appropriation of a 27-katha government plot in Gulshan-2.
Judge Md Abdus Salam of Dhaka Special Judge Court-9 recorded the deposition of ACC’s former deputy director and case complainant Yasir Arafat. Defence lawyer Khademul Islam then began cross-examining him on behalf of accused Mahbubul Haque. The court fixed November 1 for the remaining cross-examination.
The court framed charges against the accused on July 6, paving the way for the trial.
The other accused include former RAJUK chairman Humayun Khadem, engineer M Azizul Haque, former deputy director (Estate) Md Azharul Islam, former superintendent Md Habib Ullah, former assistant secretary of the Ministry of Housing and Public Works Abdus Sobhan, and brothers Mir Mohammad Hasan and Mir Md Nurul Afsar.
The ACC initially filed the case against 11 people on February 6, 2024. Murshedy was not named in the original case, but the anti-graft agency later submitted a charge sheet against him and 12 others on December 31.
According to the charge sheet, the accused allegedly acted in collusion and abused their official positions to create forged records concerning Plot No. CEN (D)-27, Holding No. 29, Road No. 104, despite the 27-katha property being listed as abandoned government property.
The accused allegedly facilitated its transfer and mutation without obtaining the required government release, creating an opportunity to misappropriate the state-owned property.
Murshedy was arrested on October 1 last year and has remained in jail since then.
The allegations against the accused have yet to be proven in court.
