BNP-AL supporters clash in New York

Supporters of the ruling BNP and the Awami League clashed in New York on Sunday (September 20) evening, ahead of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s arrival in the United States, prompting riot police to intervene.

The confrontation took place at Diversity Plaza in Jackson Heights as supporters of both parties gathered in connection with Tarique’s visit to New York to attend the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly.

More than 50 riot police officers were deployed to disperse the rival groups and bring the situation under control.

BNP supporters had gathered at Diversity Plaza to welcome Tarique, who departed Bangladesh on Monday morning, Bangladesh time-- Sunday evening in New York.

Awami League supporters gathered nearby and responded with counter-slogans. Tensions escalated as the two groups exchanged verbal abuse, followed by pushing and shoving.

Several Awami League supporters were also seen tearing down banners put up by BNP supporters to welcome Tarique.


The confrontation followed a series of rival slogans exchanged by supporters of the two parties in Jackson Heights, a major hub for the Bangladeshi community in New York.

BNP supporters chanted slogans welcoming Tarique, while Awami League supporters called for the return of their party to power and praised former prime minister Sheikh Hasina.
