Milk prices rise by Tk 10 per litre across brands

The prices of packaged liquid milk have increased by up to Tk 10 per litre across almost all major brands, adding to the financial burden on low- and middle-income families.

Milk Vita raised the price of its half-litre packet by Tk 5 to Tk 60 last month, while the price of its one-litre packet increased by Tk 10 to Tk 110.

Prices of liquid milk from other brands have also recently increased. Half-litre packets of Farm Fresh, Aarong and PRAN Dairy are now selling for Tk 55, while one-litre packets are priced between Tk 110 and Tk 115.

Consumers have expressed dissatisfaction over the price hikes, saying milk is an important source of daily nutrition but is becoming increasingly difficult for many families to afford.

Many consumers said the higher prices could force low- and middle-income families to reduce their regular milk consumption, particularly for children. Some said continued increases in the prices of essential food items were putting additional pressure on household budgets.

Retailers said sales of liquid milk have declined following the price increase. They also claimed that the prices of almost all brands had risen by around Tk 10 per litre.

Manufacturers, however, said the price adjustment was necessary due to rising production costs. They cited higher prices of packaging materials, gas, electricity and transportation as factors behind the increase.

Milk Vita Chairman SM Amir Hamza Shatil said the prices of packaging materials had increased significantly, while higher gas and fuel costs had raised transportation expenses.

He said the company had been incurring losses due to the rising costs and was therefore forced to increase milk prices.

Milk Vita also said it had raised its purchase price for milk from farmers by Tk 3 per litre.

The latest increase in milk prices has added further pressure on low- and middle-income families amid rising prices of essential commodities. Consumers have urged producers to keep milk prices within the purchasing capacity of ordinary people.
