Hundreds of flights cancelled as Typhoon Dujuan nears Japan

Typhoon Dujuan disrupted air, rail and public events in Japan on Monday as the powerful storm approached the country’s eastern coast during the five-day “Silver Week” holiday.

Japan Airlines cancelled 120 domestic and 15 international flights, while All Nippon Airways cancelled 140 domestic flights due to the storm.

Some railway services were also suspended in Tokyo and neighbouring areas as heavy rain and strong winds affected transportation.

The typhoon also disrupted major events. An equestrian eventing competition at the Asian Games in central Aichi prefecture was postponed until Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the Tokyo Game Show, one of the world’s largest video game trade fairs, was shut down ahead of its final day on Monday.

The storm is threatening travel plans during Silver Week, a holiday period that normally sees a sharp increase in domestic travel.

Heavy rainfall had already affected parts of Chiba prefecture and the Izu Islands, while more than 4,000 households in Chiba were left without power.

The Japan Meteorological Agency warned that the storm could bring record-breaking rainfall, with the total rainfall through Tuesday potentially exceeding the average monthly rainfall for September.

Authorities have also warned of an increased risk of flash floods and landslides in central Japan and the Kanto region, including Tokyo and surrounding prefectures.
