Hegseth denies report of unreported US troop deaths in Iran war

At least 22 US service members have died since the US-Israeli war with Iran began, four more than the number publicly listed by the Pentagon, according to a Washington Post report.

The Post, citing five US officials familiar with the Defense Department’s internal casualty records, reported that the Pentagon’s public database listed 18 military fatalities as of Friday. A sixth official put the death toll at 23.

The officials said some of the additional deaths may not have been directly related to combat but involved US personnel stationed in the Middle East amid ongoing hostilities. The Post also reported that three US contractors based in the region have died since combat operations began.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth rejected the report, calling it a “complete LIE” in a post on X. The Pentagon declined to comment on the discrepancy when questioned by the newspaper.

The identities and circumstances of the additional deaths remain unclear. The Pentagon’s public casualty system is used to record military fatalities and injuries.

More than 820 US service members have reportedly been wounded since the conflict began, according to the Pentagon’s public database.
