Sub-registrar, two aides held with Tk 200,000 bribe

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) arrested a sub-registrar and two other officials while allegedly taking Tk 200,000 in bribes at the Pahartali Sub-Registry Office in Chattogram on Tuesday.

ACC Public Relations Officer Md Aktarul Islam said a special team from the commission’s Chattogram district office conducted the operation on Tuesday.

The arrested officials are Pahartali Sub-Registrar Abdus Sobhan, head clerk Faruk Islam and office attendant Rupun Das.

According to the ACC, a Chattogram lawyer had submitted two partnership agreements at the Pahartali Sub-Registry Office for registration on behalf of his client. Although there were no errors in the documents, the sub-registrar allegedly delayed the process intentionally.

Later, Sub-Registrar Abdus Sobhan and Head Clerk Faruk Islam allegedly demanded Tk 200,000 in exchange for registering the two documents.

The lawyer then complained to the ACC hotline 106 and later submitted a written complaint to the ACC’s Chattogram-1 district office.

The three officials were allegedly caught red-handed while receiving the Tk 200,000.

The ACC is preparing to file a case against them under the Anti-Corruption Commission Act and produce them before a court, according to the commission.
