Argentina set to offer Scaloni new deal through 2030

Argentina are reportedly preparing to extend head coach Lionel Scaloni’s contract, with the World Cup-winning manager set to remain in charge through the 2028 Copa América and potentially the 2030 World Cup.

According to reports from Latin American media, Scaloni held a closed-door meeting with the Argentine Football Association (AFA) on Monday night, September 21, to discuss his future. TyC Sports reported that Scaloni has agreed in principle to renew his contract, with financial terms reportedly the only major issue still to be resolved.

The proposed deal could follow a '2+2' structure, according to sports television and radio network D Sports. Under the reported arrangement, Scaloni would initially extend his contract through the 2028 Copa América, with an option to continue until the 2030 World Cup.

Scaloni’s current contract with the AFA is due to expire in December, and his future had been uncertain following Argentina’s defeat to Spain in the 2026 World Cup final. The coach had previously hinted that the loss could mark the end of his tenure and was visibly emotional after the final, apologising to supporters during his post-match press conference.

However, a continuation now appears increasingly likely, with the AFA reportedly keen to keep Scaloni at the helm as Argentina begin another transition period.

The federation has also sought the views of the national-team players, with reports suggesting that the overwhelming majority are in favour of Scaloni remaining as coach.

Argentina face several challenges following the World Cup, including disciplinary action against multiple players over an altercation after the final and Lionel Messi’s retirement from international football.

Against that backdrop, retaining Scaloni would provide continuity as the Albiceleste prepare for the next phase of their post-Messi era.
