Clinics barred within 1km of government hospitals

The government has decided not to allow new private clinics to be established within one kilometre of any government hospital. Government doctors will also be barred from practising at existing clinics within the same boundary.
Director of the Directorate General of Health Services (Hospitals and Clinics) Dr Md Nurul Islam confirmed the matter to the media on Wednesday.
He said the directive was issued following a decision taken at a meeting on improving healthcare services at the Prime Minister's Office on August 17. Relevant departments and authorities were instructed on Tuesday to take necessary steps to implement the decision.
The directive comes amid the rapid establishment of private clinics around government hospitals. Agents of some clinics have been accused of taking patients from government hospitals to private facilities through brokers.
It has also been observed that many doctors at government hospitals regularly practise at private clinics after their official working hours.
