Pakistan head coach Mike Hesson has described the national side as one of the strongest teams in world T20 cricket, placing them around fourth or fifth globally.
Speaking to reporters at the Hanif Mohammad High Performance Centre at Karachi’s National Stadium, Hesson discussed Pakistan’s recent Test struggles, progress in ODIs and the strength of the T20 squad. He also expressed disappointment over Salman Mirza’s injury.
Test struggles a concernPakistan recently suffered a 3-0 Test series whitewash against England. England won the opening Test by an innings and 103 runs, the second by 194 runs and the third by eight wickets.
Hesson acknowledged that Pakistan have struggled in the longest format but pointed to gradual progress in the other two formats, particularly ODI cricket.
“Test cricket is an area where we need to improve,” Hesson said, while highlighting the team’s development in limited-overs cricket.
Confidence in T20 strength
Hesson believes Pakistan’s T20 squad has the quality to rank among the world’s top four or five sides.
He is particularly optimistic about Pakistan’s prospects at the Asian Games in Japan, saying favourable conditions could allow the team’s strong batting combination to make a significant impact.
Blend of experience and youth
Pakistan have combined experienced players with emerging talent in their Asian Games squad, according to Hesson.
He said the selection was designed to strike a balance between experience and youth, with the combination also serving as an important part of the team’s preparation for the tournament.
Hesson also expressed disappointment over Salman Mirza’s injury, saying the setback had affected the team’s preparations.
Following the Test series defeat to England, Pakistan are now preparing separate squads across the three formats as they manage a busy international schedule ahead.
