Hilsa prices soar in Dhaka markets

Hilsa prices remain high in Dhaka markets, putting the popular fish beyond the reach of many buyers.

A kilogram of 800-900g hilsa is selling for Tk 1,500, while fish weighing 1kg or more are priced at Tk 2,200 per kg. As a result, buyers have to spend over Tk 2,000 for a large hilsa.

The prices were found at North Badda and Middle Badda kitchen markets on Friday.

Buyers said the high prices are making it difficult to include hilsa in their regular household shopping. Many are leaving the markets without buying the fish, while others are looking for smaller ones.

Hilsa sellers said sales have dropped as customers are discouraged by the prices. Middle Badda seller Haru Das said many customers ask the price and leave without buying.

Meanwhile, some buyers also showed little interest in Indian hilsa, saying they prefer local fish for its taste and quality. However, they said the high price of local hilsa is also making it difficult to buy.
