Two dead, four missing after blast near Athens’ Acropolis

At least two people have been killed and four others are missing after an explosion destroyed a three-storey building in central Athens, Greece, on Saturday.
The blast occurred in the Plaka district, near major tourist attractions including the Acropolis and the Temple of Olympian Zeus. The building reportedly housed a holiday rental property.
An American man and woman were killed in the explosion, while two other US tourists are among those reported missing, AFP reported, citing local officials. A Greek national and a UK national who lived in the building are also missing.
Emergency workers recovered the bodies of a woman and a man from the rubble as rescue operations continued. Excavators and thermal imaging cameras were being used to search for possible survivors.
A gas leak is suspected to have caused the explosion, although the cause has not yet been confirmed.
The force of the blast completely collapsed the building and damaged nearby structures, while debris was scattered across the surrounding road. Some nearby buildings were evacuated, and several people were reportedly injured by falling debris.
The missing tourists were reportedly identified after they failed to arrive at Athens airport for their scheduled flight.
Athens Mayor Haris Doukas described the incident as an “incredible disaster”.
