Indian national remanded again over suspected subversive activities

An Indian national arrested under Section 54 of the Code of Criminal Procedure on suspicion of involvement in subversive activities in Bangladesh has been remanded in police custody for four more days.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Jewel Rana passed the order on Sunday after a hearing. Earlier on September 23, the court had granted him a four-day remand.

The accused, identified as RabiuI Islam, was produced before the court after completion of his initial remand. Inspector Mezbah Uddin of the DMP Detective Branch’s Ramna division sought a fresh seven-day remand for further interrogation.

According to the remand petition, RabiuI was arrested in Uttara West based on a tip-off. He entered Bangladesh on September 14 and gave inconsistent information about his movements and purpose of visiting the country.

Police said discrepancies were found between the dates of birth recorded on his Indian passport, driving licence and national identity card. Although he had visited Bangladesh several times, he could not provide a clear reason for his visits.

The investigators suspect that he may have links to subversive activities in Dhaka and elsewhere in the country. Police said he provided important information during the previous remand and that further interrogation was necessary for the investigation.
