Teen's bail hearing deferred in Baridhara road death

The bail hearing of a teenager detained over the death of construction worker Mehedi Hasan Mim in a car accident in Dhaka’s Baridhara Diplomatic Zone has been deferred to October 4.

Dhaka Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-8 Judge Md Abdul Moktadir fixed the date on Sunday (September 27) after lawyers for Ajan Ali Sharif sought his bail.

Earlier, the same court had rejected his bail petition and ordered that he be sent to a juvenile development centre.

The bail petition said Ajan was sitting beside the driver when the car ran over Mehedi, who was resting on a footpath. It claimed the accident was unintentional as Mehedi, who was hearing- and speech-impaired, could not move away quickly despite the horn being sounded. His family also paid Tk 900,000 to the victim’s family as compensation through a local settlement, it said.

However, police told the court that CCTV footage showed Ajan getting out through the driver’s door immediately after the accident. The investigating officer said preliminary evidence of his involvement had been found and sought his detention for the sake of a proper investigation.

Mehedi’s elder brother, Moktadir Islam, filed the case with Gulshan Police Station on September 23 under the Road Transport Act, accusing Akash Mark(44) of driving recklessly and running over Mehedi, causing his death.
