Arguments in corruption case against Abed Ali’s son deferred

Arguments in a corruption case against Syed Sohanur Rahman Siam, son of former PSC official Syed Abed Ali Jibon, have been deferred until September 30.

Dhaka Divisional Special Judge B M Tariqul Kabir fixed the new date on Monday (September 28) after granting a time petition filed by the defence, as Siam’s senior lawyer was ill, said ACC prosecutor Delwar Jahan Rumi.

The court completed recording depositions of 11 prosecution witnesses on September 13. Siam later claimed innocence and sought justice.

The court framed charges against him on June 17, formally starting the trial.

ACC Deputy Assistant Director Zakir Hossain filed the case on January 5 last year, accusing Siam of acquiring Tk37.30 lakh in illegal assets between September 3, 2021 and June 30, 2024.

After investigation, the ACC submitted the charge sheet on December 30 last year, alleging that Siam possessed Tk31.81 lakh in assets beyond his known sources of income.

Siam came into the spotlight in July 2024 following allegations of question leaks in PSC recruitment examinations involving his father. The CID later arrested Abed Ali, Siam and several others over the alleged question-leak scandal.

The ACC subsequently filed separate cases against Abed Ali, his wife Shahreen Akter Shilpi and Siam over allegations including illegal wealth accumulation.
