Delhi to ban construction for six weeks over pollution

Delhi will completely ban construction and demolition activities from December 10 to January 20 to curb winter air pollution, as part of a new set of measures announced by the Delhi government.
The restrictions are part of Delhi’s winter pollution action plan. Dust-generating demolition and outdoor civil construction activities will also be prohibited from November 1 to January 31.
Delhi, a megacity of around 30 million people, regularly faces severe air pollution during winter due to vehicle emissions, construction dust, industrial pollution and smoke from crop-residue burning in neighbouring areas.
Delhi Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa said the measures were being introduced early to prevent air quality from reaching hazardous levels during winter.
Cold weather conditions during winter can trap pollutants close to the ground, worsening air quality in the capital.
The government will also double parking charges at authorised parking sites from November 1 to February 28 to discourage private vehicle use. Parking facilities owned and managed by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation will be exempt.
Staggered office timings will also be introduced from November 1 to February 28. MCD offices will operate from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM, while Delhi government offices will operate from 10:00 AM to 6:30 PM.
The government and private offices will also reduce their on-site workforce by 50 per cent during the period, with the remaining employees working from home.
The measures are aimed at reducing construction dust and vehicular emissions during the months when Delhi’s air quality typically deteriorates sharply.
