What happened during Tarique Rahman’s five-day US visit?

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has returned home after a five-day visit to New York to attend the 81st UN General Assembly. It was his first visit to the UNGA as prime minister. 

During the visit, he delivered his first UNGA speech, held 11 bilateral meetings and raised Bangladesh’s priorities on the Rohingya crisis, climate change, economic cooperation and global peace. 

First UNGA speech

Tarique Rahman addressed the General Debate on September 24, presenting Bangladesh’s positions on global peace and security, climate change, sustainable development, humanitarian issues and the Rohingya crisis. 

Rohingya and climate issues

The Rohingya crisis featured prominently in his diplomatic engagements. He also participated in high-level discussions on climate action, sea-level rise and climate finance, calling for stronger international cooperation and support for climate-vulnerable countries. 

Bilateral and economic diplomacy

The prime minister held meetings with leaders and senior officials from countries including Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Croatia. Discussions covered trade, investment, skilled manpower, energy security, education and technology. 

He also met Gates Foundation CEO Mark Suzman on public health, vaccination and healthcare modernisation, and attended a breakfast meeting with Wall Street investors to discuss investment opportunities in Bangladesh. 

11 Boeing aircraft deal

One of the major business developments during the visit was Biman Bangladesh Airlines’ agreement to purchase 11 Boeing aircraft as part of plans to expand its fleet and open new international routes.
