Hasnat Abdullah linked to ‘crossfire’ killings in testimony

The International Crimes Tribunal-2 has accepted the testimony of former deputy inspector general (DIG) Md Humayun Kabir in a case over the alleged extrajudicial killings of two Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal and Jatiyatabadi Samajik Sangskritik Sangstha (Jasas) leaders in Agailjhara, Barishal.

The prosecution submitted the former DIG’s statement as evidence before the tribunal on Tuesday. The tribunal accepted it. The testimony of the investigation officer, the 23rd witness in the case, was also recorded on the same day.

According to Kabir’s statement to the investigation agency, former Barishal-1 MP Abul Hasanat Abdullah had allegedly issued political instructions that led then Barishal superintendent of police (SP) AKM Ehsanullah to carry out the killings.

The two victims were Tipu Howlader, then joint general secretary of Agailjhara upazila unit of Chhatra Dal, and Kabir Molla, organising secretary of the upazila unit of JASAS. They were arrested from Dhaka and Keraniganj on February 9, 2015, in a case over the torching of a vehicle.

They were later allegedly shot dead in Agailjhara on the night of February 21, 2015.

In his statement, Kabir said the then officer-in-charge of Agailjhara Police Station told him that SP Ehsanullah had ordered the two suspects to be killed in a “crossfire”. As local police officers refused to carry out the order, officers from Wazirpur Police Station were brought in to execute the killings, he said.

Kabir also said Ehsanullah later went to the police station and instructed officers to make an entry in the general diary. Although adverse remarks were reportedly made in Ehsanullah’s annual confidential report over the incident, he was later promoted to additional DIG and posted again to the Barishal range, allegedly due to Abdullah’s influence.

The four accused in the case are former MP Abul Hasanat Abdullah, former SP AKM Ehsanullah, former Wazirpur Police Station ASI Md Mahabul Islam and ASI Md Jasim Uddin. Abdullah and Ehsanullah are absconding, while Mahabul and Jasim were produced before the tribunal on Tuesday.

The case alleges that Abdullah abused state power and conspired to have the two political leaders killed after failing to politically counter them.
