Govt to ensure financial security, social protection for elderly: PM

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has said the government is working to ensure financial security, healthcare and a dignified life for senior citizens, with plans to expand old-age allowances, provide financial assistance through the ‘Family Card’ and strengthen primary healthcare and social protection programmes.

He made the remarks in a message issued on Wednesday ahead of the International Day of Older Persons 2026, to be observed on Thursday.

This year’s theme is “The Age of Longevity: Rethinking Systems for Longer Lives.”

The Prime Minister said rising life expectancy, driven by greater health awareness and advances in medical science, is creating new opportunities while also highlighting the need to modernise healthcare, social protection and family support systems.

He said the government has taken multifaceted measures to ensure social security, financial protection, healthcare and a dignified life for older citizens as part of its vision for a welfare-oriented and humane state.

He said initiatives have been taken to create opportunities for senior citizens to live safe and respectful lives, expand old-age allowances and make the social protection system more effective and inclusive.

According to the Prime Minister, the government is implementing various measures to strengthen social protection for poor and vulnerable groups in line with its electoral manifesto.

He said the government is also working to keep older people healthy, socially active and connected to social protection programmes rather than allowing them to be neglected.

On financial security, Tarique said the amount of old-age allowances has been increased and the number of beneficiaries expanded. He also said the government’s electoral commitment to introduce the ‘Family Card’ is being pursued alongside efforts to expand primary healthcare and strengthen the social safety net.

Describing older people as a foundation of families and society, he said Bangladesh has been built on their sacrifices, experience and wisdom.

He stressed the need to maintain respect, compassion and responsibility towards older people at the family, social and state levels. The government is also working to strengthen a life-cycle-based social protection system to ensure healthcare, financial stability and opportunities for active participation in society for senior citizens.

The Prime Minister said the government would take all possible measures to protect the interests of older citizens. He also emphasised the importance of religious, social and family values in preserving their care, respect and dignity.

He extended his greetings and respect to all senior citizens and expressed hope for the success of the 36th International Day of Older Persons 2026.
