Observer Online Report
After American rapper Macklemore took a vocal stand for Palestine on stage, a move that sparked controversy and led to him being removed from Ed Sheeran’s ‘Loop Tour’, the rapper is returning to the stage with a new initiative.
Just weeks after being dropped from Ed Sheeran’s tour, Macklemore announced a new concert series. Titled ‘Free Palestine’, the tour will take place across Europe. He shared the news himself in an Instagram post on Wednesday.
According to Macklemore, tickets for the three European arena shows sold out almost immediately after going on sale. The rapper was astonished by the rapid response. He said the event was organised quickly with the aim of showing solidarity with Palestine and using the stage to raise funds, adding that it demonstrates the power of collective action.
He further said the lineup of artists for each show of the ‘Free Palestine’ tour would be announced soon. In Macklemore’s words, “…When those in power try to silence our calls for liberation, art will always be a form of resistance.”
Last week, Macklemore announced three arena shows in Europe—in Dublin, Ireland; Paris, France; and London, UK. Proceeds from the shows will go to various organisations working to support the Palestinian people.
Macklemore’s ‘Free Palestine’ tour will kick off on October 26 at Dublin’s 3Arena. The subsequent shows will take place on October 29 at Paris’s Accor Arena and October 30 at London’s OVO Arena Wembley.
In his Wednesday Instagram post, Macklemore wrote that tickets for all three shows had sold out “instantly”. Expressing surprise at the swift response, he said the event was organised quickly based on the belief that artists could use the stage to express solidarity with Palestine and raise funds.
He added that the list of performing artists would be announced soon.
