National Security Intelligence (NSI) warned the government after finding five top companies holding back imported LPG to create an artificial market crisis.

NSI submitted an intelligence report to the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources on Thursday naming the five companies. The firms are Aygaz, Omera, Petromax, BM Energy, and Jamuna.

The report alleged that these companies restricted the supply of imported LPG from around September 22. This action comes amid widespread complaints of 12 kg LPG cylinders being sold well above the government-fixed rate across the country.

The Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) set the price of a 12 kg LPG cylinder at Tk 1,585. However, consumers in various regions are reportedly paying over Tk 2,000 per cylinder.

Import and supply figures indicate no actual shortage of LPG in the country. Energy Minister Iqbal Hasan Mahmud confirmed receiving the NSI report.

The intelligence report warned that holding back supplies creates artificial scarcity, allowing prices to surge. It advised authorities to inspect the entire import, storage, and distribution process immediately.
