Fierce clashes between Yemeni government forces and Iran-backed Houthi rebels in the southwestern Taiz province have left 1,540 Houthi fighters killed or wounded within 24 hours, according to the Yemeni military, reported The Middle East Eye.
Yemeni army spokesperson Colonel Majed Abdullah Al-Nazili stated that government forces launched 474 operations targeting Houthi positions, supply lines, command centers, and military assets using airstrikes, drones, artillery, missiles, and rocket launchers.
In response to Houthi infiltration attempts and troop buildups, government forces closed the strategic Al-Houban crossing on Saturday. The crucial passage, which connects the Houthi-controlled Al-Houban area to government-held Taiz city, had reopened in 2024 for humanitarian purposes after a nine-year closure.
The sudden surge in hostilities follows the collapse of a UN-brokered ceasefire in July. Recent Houthi advances near the strategic Mokha port sparked heavy counter-offensives, with government troops managing to stabilize key frontlines in Bani Bakaru, Maqbanah, and eastern Taiz.
The escalating violence has triggered a severe humanitarian crisis. According to Yemen's Executive Unit for Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) Camps Management, nearly 198,000 people have been displaced since September, with Taiz hosting over 97,000 displaced individuals across 15 townships.
