A Dhaka court has denied bail to Jamaat-e-Islami leader and former MP Major (retd.) Akhteruzzaman in a case filed over allegations of obstructing government duties and misbehaving with officials at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.
Akhteruzzaman was produced before the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court on Sunday after completing a one-day remand. Following a hearing, the court rejected his bail petition and ordered that he be sent to jail.
Earlier, the case’s investigating officer, SI Majedul Islam of Airport Police Station, sought an order to keep Akhteruzzaman in custody until the investigation was completed. Defence lawyers, meanwhile, sought his release on bail.
The case was filed over an incident at the airport on October 1, reportedly stemming from a shortage of luggage and trolleys.
According to the first information report, Akhteruzzaman allegedly engaged in an altercation with airport Executive Director Group Captain SM Ragib Samad and threatened him.
The complaint also alleges that he misbehaved with and physically assaulted a security official after being stopped from filming in a restricted area. It further accuses him of throwing bottles of Zamzam water and behaving aggressively toward a representative of Biman Bangladesh Airlines.
DB police arrested Akhteruzzaman from his residence in the capital’s Cantonment area on Friday (October 2). He was subsequently shown arrested in the airport police case.
He was placed on one-day remand on Saturday and produced before the court again on Sunday after the remand ended. Following the hearing, the court ordered that he be sent to jail.
