Dhaka-20 (Dhamrai) Member of Parliament Tamiz Uddin issued an open warning to local journalists on Sunday, threatening to "teach them journalism" if they publish reports critical of him or the BNP.
The lawmaker made the remarks during a summoned press briefing at his Kiswan Cold Storage facility in Aingon, Dhamrai, following media coverage of a violent clash between two BNP factions in Balitha on Saturday that left at least five people injured.
The clash involved Tamiz Uddin’s supporters and followers of Ramijur Rahman Roma, former general secretary of Dhamrai Upazila Jubo Dal. After Roma publicly challenged the MP following the clash and was subsequently sued, local journalists reported on the altercation.
Addressing the assembled reporters, Tamiz Uddin accused them of taking bribes and giving favorable coverage to political opponents.
"If you unfairly utter another word against the BNP or political matters in Dhamrai, I will teach you journalism. Plain and simple," Tamiz Uddin warned, surrounded by senior local BNP leaders. He further accused certain journalists of taking payments ranging from Tk 2,000 to Tk 5,000 to promote extortionists and opponents, urging reporters to verify facts before publishing news.
Following the press conference, the lawmaker's followers held demonstration marches across various parts of the upazila and submitted a written complaint to the upazila administration.
