The United States will uphold its security commitments to Saudi Arabia amid renewed fighting between Yemen’s government forces and Iran-backed Houthi rebels, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has said.
Rubio made the remarks at a press conference on Monday before leaving for a European tour that includes Iceland, Greece and Portugal, Anadolu Agency reported.
He said the United States has a defence and security agreement with Saudi Arabia and Washington remains committed to the agreement.
Rubio also said Saudi Arabia has the right to defend itself against continued Houthi attacks. At the same time, Yemen’s government forces are trying to retake territory lost in previous clashes.
Fighting has intensified around the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a key waterway linking the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden. Saudi and Yemeni forces are opposing Houthi control of areas near the strategic waterway.
According to Rubio, the local counteroffensive is an expected development. He described the ongoing fighting in Yemen as a counterattack against Houthi aggression.
Earlier, Rashad al-Alimi, chairman of Yemen’s Presidential Leadership Council, announced the launch of a new military operation. The operation aims to retake the capital, Sanaa, from the Houthis and restore government control over state institutions.
The Houthis have controlled Sanaa since 2014.
Yemeni army units said on Monday that they had taken control of the Dhubab district near the Bab el-Mandeb Strait and several other strategic positions.
