A 22-day ban on catching hilsa in rivers and the sea is to come into effect from midnight to ensure uninterrupted breeding of mother hilsa.
The ban is to commence from October 8 until October 29, as a measure to ensure the reproduction of the mother hilsa fishes.
Fishermen are starting to return from the deep sea to fish landing centre in Mahipur and Alipur of Patuakhali as the ban approaches.
However, many fishermen have expressed disappointment as they have yet to find roe in the hilsa they caught.
Despite this, the fisherman said they would comply with government’s decision and refrain from catching hilsa during the restriction period.
They have, however, called for strict monitoring of the country’s maritime territory to prevent fishermen from neighbouring countries from entering Bangladeshi water during the ban.
They also demanded an increase in government incentives during the restriction period and urged the authorities to ensure that the assistance is distributed among genuine fishermen.
Under the government’s rules, anyone found catching, transporting, storing or selling hilsa in violation of the ban may face up to two years imprisonment with hard labour, a fine of up to Tk 100,000, or both.
